Installation:
Loosen the rear lug nuts and remove the locking lug nut before you jack the tires off the ground. Block the front wheels and then jack and support the car from the rear. Using a hydraulic floor jack apply upward pressure on the rear lower control arm. Remove the wheel. Disconnect the rear brakes and remove the rotor or drum. Remove the three bolts holding the knuckle to the upper and lower control arms. The halfshaft will stay connected to the knuckle. Pull the halfshaft out of the differential. A flat prybar will make it easier to remove the halfshaft from the differential. Rotate the halfshaft while applying pressure to pop the half shaft out. Remove the rear knuckle from each side. Support the halfshaft while removing. Note: A second person will make it easier.
Optional Method: Removing the bushings while knuckle is still in the car is possible. First remove the upper bolt that connects the knuckle to the upper control arm. Press the bushing out with the 4" Pulley puller. Install new polyurethane bushing. Reconnect upper control arm. Remove the two lower bolts that connect the knuckle to the lower control arm. Using the 4" pulley puller remove the two lower bushings and install the new polyurethane bushings. Reconnect the bolts and tighten. Repeat on other side.
Once the rear knuckle is removed from the car place it on suitable workbench
area. Removal of the 3 bushings (one upper & two lower) can be accomplished
by use of a 4 inch pulley puller.
Once the stock rubber bushing is removed installation of the new polyurethane
bushing is next. Remove the metal sleeve from the bushing this will ease
the installation of the harder polyurethane bushings. Spray lubricant on
the bushing and inside the knuckle before installation to ease the installation.
Using a threaded rod, two washers & two nuts you can press the new
polyurethane bushing into the knuckle. The 1/2" threaded rod and parts
can be found at any hardware store.
Once the bushing is half way installed remove the bolt and insert the dowel
back into the bushing. A TAP from a rubber hammer will be needed to fully
seat the bushing in the knuckle. Repeat these steps for removing and installing
the other lower knuckle bushing.
Removal of the upper control arm bushing.
Remove the white washer from either end of bushing and push the metal sleeve
out.
Using the 4 inch pulley puller press the upper knuckle bushing out.
To install new upper knuckle bushing you will need to insert one side into
the hole first. Grease the sleeve and insert into the bushing. Push the
two bushings together.
Then using a flat surface insert the other end of the bushing and tap together.
CAUTION: Install a NEW Rear Axle Wheel Hub Retainer Nut and do not reuse the old nut. This nut holds the knuckle to the halfshaft. Ford part number F3LY3B477A ($7) two are needed.
